Swiss Water Decaf Single Origin Blend

So what is decaf coffee exactly? The FDA specifies that decaf coffee must have 97% of the caffeine removed. The actual amount of caffeine in a cup of decaf coffee will vary depending on the beans. In an average 12 ounce cup of decaffeinated coffee, the caffeine content will be between 3 – 18 milligrams. That’s compared to an average of 140 – 300 milligrams in a regular cup of coffee! For comparison, drinking a Red Bull energy drink offers about 80 milligrams.

In processing decaf coffee beans, the caffeine is removed from the green beans before the roasting begins. There are multiple processes used globally to remove most of the caffeine from the green coffee beans. However, not all of the methods are created equal.

The Swiss Water Decaf processing invented by “Swiss Water” is considered the only method of processing decaf beans certified organic. The process removes the caffeine by way of a naturally occurring plant chemical or by using CO2.  Both methods are considered certified organic. Methyl Chloride is used in all other decaffeinating processes and contains possible carcinogens. Most supermarket decaf coffees do not use the Swiss Water methods.
